Blackburn Museum Training Workshop 2

A selection of cards at commencement of an ideas workshop

To put forward ideas to use the space adjacent to the Blackburn Museum, a system devised by (insert name). It consists of an interlinking card system, the colours appertaining to different concepts. The green cards are used to put forward ideas ans marked accordingly.
The Green cards
From the photograph above, one can see some of the ideas written on the green cards, such as cafe, seating, 'live performance area' and other ideas.
The Blue cards
These cards appertain to  more global concepts, such as accessibility, security, family friendly, and health and safety.
Red Cards
With any venture of this type there are going to be problems and risks. These can be written on the red cards. Problems such as security, vandalism, antisocial behaviour etc.

Connected cards delivering a virtual map of ideas and connected considerations

Linking cards
These card can now be linked to represent ideas that are connected, such as a seating area being adjacent to a cafe. The blue cards can shadow a majority of the ideas and the red cards can be attached to certain green cards that have ideas that are open to abuse.

The Architecture of powerful Questions

Generative questioning techniques

CONSTRUCTION

To ask questions that are not leading and illicit a wider response as opposed to straight yes/no answers.
A closed question eg.
'Do you think the available space needs improvement and development?'
This question warrants a basic response and is not asking for any details.

Open questions can be established by the use of interrogative expressions. The order of most powerful to least is said to be:-

WHY?
HOW?
WHAT?

WHO?, WHEN?,WHERE?

WHICH?

Our workshop group suggestions were not too far off the mark
______________________

SCOPE
How can we best manage the project within clearly defined parameters?. From the cards we can get ideas for the specific space that is available withing the confines of the surrounding culture and its needs. To take on social problems, e.g poverty, would be too big a problem to solve and outside the scope of the project.

ASSUMPTIONS
Example

How can we compete with other similar initiatives?

This question assumes that one would have to compete with others that share similar goals, albeit, in different areas.
It would be more beneficial to ask a more Non assumptive question, such as:-
How can we collaborate with other similar initiatives?

Trip to Sadlers Yard, Manchester
NOMA Project

NOMA is an £800 million, 20-acre (8-hectare) mixed-use redevelopment scheme in Manchester. It is the largest development project in North West England ahead of developments such as MediaCityUK and Atlantic Gateway and overall is the largest development in the UK outside South East England.[1]
NOMA focuses on revitalising and opening the northern area of Manchester city centre which has not undergone the redevelopment seen in other central areas of the city. The Co-operative Group, the company backing the scheme, have been based in the Manchester area since their inception in 1843 and hope the development will attract more companies to invest in Manchester as they have done and continue to do. The development involves the creation of 4 million square feet (400,000 square metres) of office, residential, retail, leisure and hotel space.

What is happening in the developed areas of Manchester?

Take a look

Seating. Note strategically placed metal rails to prevent skateboarders and also to prevent the homeless laying down. The  thoroughfare appears to only run in one direction and it is noted that some people choose to climb over the walls instead of walking around.

People are seen to be using the seating for a variety of reasons, from eating lunch, conducting business and in this case, making a call.

The array of eateries.

It would seem food outlet, be it cafe's restaurants or street food festivals seem to be taking over from retail. Maybe because of people shopping on line

Buskers using space to perform.

More open air food outlets. This theme restaurant in the shape of an old oast
( a kiln used for drying hops)

The Ivy
A more picturesque restaurant in the heart of the city

Any plain flat surface is asking to be painted on by vandals and so called graffiti artist. This wall already shows signs of where unwanted graffiti has been removed.

Detritus left behind on a tree, probably from some old poster campaign

A coffee shop contributes to filling the adjacent seating area

A water display as a focal point. A moving piece of artwork?
Scenery in motion.

Sky Rats?
Wherever there is food and people, there will always be pigeons.

A small play area can keep the children busy for a while for parents to take a short break from shopping

Indoor Mall. Once the home of retail, now a large food court.

An area cordoned off to allow grass to rejuvenate

Maybe this shape of grass filled area was not such a good idea as constant corner cutting has led to an ugly muddy area.

Email from Jenna Gardener

9am – 3pm Wednesday 15th: Trip To Lancaster University Imagination Lab: This is an important session where I will present the project and some of the key findings to Lancaster staff and students. This will be led by me so don’t panic! You’ll then be working with their students to get a fresh pair of eyes and help us to make sense of the findings. We will set off from outside the University building between 9am/9.15am to arrive there for 10am. We will have refreshments then I’ll get the fun started! We return to UCBC for 3pm.

Back at the Making Rooms, Blackburn.

Monday – Friday 3rd – 7th June: FINAL DEVELOPMENT, PRODUCTION AND RENDERING: This will involve us working ad hoc to finalise the proposals that we create this week.

EXHIBITION PLANNING AND PREPARATION: In this stage again we can work ad hoc, as and when, to develop the plans and outputs for the exhibition.

Wednesday 5th June 10am-3pm (tomorrow!): EXHIBITION PREP IN THE SPACE (across from Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery) – the boards around the space need stripping and preparing for painting, I’ll be there in my scruffy clothes, most likely in the rain, between those times. I’ll also be making sure that the viewing holes are cut – hopefully Tom from the Making Rooms can oblige!

Todays task. Painting the boards ready for the Festival of Making

Dear Julia,

Thank you for supporting our project at The Making Rooms! Just to confirm that my colleagues Mark Thistlethwaite and Cath Sutcliffe will be coming along tomorrow in the morning (Friday 7th June) – is 10am-12pm okay? I’ve told the students that they can come during the normal public opening hours and at this time I don’t have firm confirmation who, if any, will be turning up.

ACE Co-Producers – if you are going along and you need a particular piece of equipment please email Julia to book in advance: julia.jacob@makingrooms.org If you’ve not already started on an idea, the staff at the Making Rooms are brilliant at helping you to realise your ideas and guide you practically in terms of prototyping and materials etc. The world is your oyster – all you’ll need is a sketch or example of what you’d like to make or achieve, and they can tell you if it’s possible! Mark and Cath are there 10-12 and Rajan and Christina are there cutting vinyl from 11am.

Kelly – your wishing tree has been made and it looks fantastic by the way!!!

After the paint job

So after the painting of the boards ready for the graphics to present the take up space agenda at the festival of making, we turn up to find that some graffiti artists just couldn't resist a blank canvas. So, paint it again we did.
